CHAPTER 25: Clara Speaks
Clara did not cry when she spoke.
That surprised Ethan, though he knew it should not have. Margaret had spent weeks turning Clara’s tears into evidence against her. Now Clara stood in the courtroom with steady hands and gave truth without decoration.
“I was tired,” she said. “I was scared. I was learning how to be a mother while someone with power kept telling me I was failing before I had even begun.”
Margaret looked down.
Clara continued.
“I did cry. I cried because my husband was away, because my baby was newborn, because Mrs. Caldwell kept coming into my home with doctors, lawyers, and threats I did not ask for. But crying did not make me dangerous. Being afraid did not make me unfit. Refusing to hand over my child did not make me unstable.”
Judge Bennett watched her closely.
Clara turned slightly, just enough to face Margaret without speaking only to her.
“You said nobody would believe me because I came into this family with nothing. But I did not come with nothing. I came with a name my parents gave me. I came with a life I built. I came with love for my husband and my son. And that was never yours to measure.”
Ethan felt his eyes burn.
Clara looked back at the judge.
“I am asking for protection. Not revenge. I want my son to grow up knowing family does not mean ownership. I want him to know love can be firm without being cruel.”
The courtroom remained silent after she sat.
Margaret’s attorney had no cross-examination.
