CHAPTER 5: The Mother Who Wanted a Throne

Margaret stepped toward Ethan as if she could still rescue the night by speaking with authority.
“You are emotional,” she said. “You just came home. You are seeing this at the worst possible moment.”
Ethan laughed once, without humor.
“The worst possible moment for whom?”
“For this family.”
He looked around the nursery.
“For this family? Or for you?”
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
“Everything I have done has been to protect the Caldwell name.”
Clara lowered her face into Noah’s blanket. Ethan saw her shoulders shake silently.
The Caldwell name. He had heard those three words all his life. They had been used to explain every cruelty. Do not cry at your father’s funeral because of the Caldwell name. Do not date women who do not understand our world because of the Caldwell name. Do not embarrass your mother by choosing love over strategy because of the Caldwell name.
Now his mother had brought those words into his son’s nursery.
Ethan took one step closer.
“Noah is not your name.”
Margaret stared at him.
“He is my grandson.”
“He is Clara’s child. He is my child. He is not your inheritance. He is not your public image. He is not a seat you can fight for at a board table.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened into a thin line.
“You have become weak since you married her.”
“No,” Ethan said. “I became a husband. Then I became a father. You just don’t recognize either one because you never respected either one.”
Mrs. Nolan made a small sound from the doorway.
Margaret turned sharply. “You will regret involving staff in private family matters.”
May you like
Ethan did not look away from his mother.
“This stopped being private when you put your hands on my wife.”
