CHAPTER 20: Clara’s Choice

Clara did not want to be hidden forever.
At first, Ethan thought staying in Maine would help her heal away from the noise. But on the third morning, he found her sitting at June’s kitchen table with a notebook open in front of her.
Noah slept nearby. Sunlight touched his tiny face.
Clara had written a list.
Not of fears.
Of decisions.
Emergency protective order.
New pediatrician.
Therapist.
Independent lawyer.
Move out of Caldwell estate.
Change locks.
Public statement only if necessary.
Ethan read the last line twice.
“Move out?” he asked.
Clara looked up.
“I can’t raise Noah in that house.”
He nodded.
“Then we won’t.”
“You love that house.”
“I loved what I thought it meant.”
Clara closed the notebook.
“I need you to understand something. I don’t want revenge. I don’t want to humiliate your mother for the sake of it. I want her away from our child. I want every person who helped her to know they cannot do it again. And I want my son to grow up in a home where nobody uses fear as tradition.”
Ethan sat across from her.
“That’s what I want too.”
Clara studied him carefully.
It was not mistrust exactly. It was the caution of someone learning whether safety would last longer than a promise.
“Then let me speak in court,” she said.
Ethan wanted to protect her from it.
But protection had already been used against her.
So he answered the only way he could.
“Your voice leads. I’ll stand beside you.”
Clara nodded.
May you like
That was when Ethan knew she was not simply surviving the night anymore.
She was taking the story back.
