CHAPTER 22: Margaret at the Gate

Margaret appeared at June’s house on the seventh day.

A black car stopped at the end of the gravel drive just after sunset. Ethan saw it from the kitchen window and knew before the driver opened the door.

Clara was upstairs feeding Noah.

June stood beside Ethan, drying a plate with a towel.

“That her?”

“Yes.”

June set the plate down.

“I have a cast-iron skillet and poor impulse control.”

Despite everything, Ethan almost smiled.

“I’ll go.”

Margaret waited by the front gate in a camel coat, looking absurdly elegant against the weathered fence and muddy roadside. She did not step onto the property. The temporary protective order was already pending, and even Margaret understood lines when consequences stood behind them.

“You look tired,” she said.

Ethan stopped several feet away.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I came to see my grandson.”

“No.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“One day he will ask why his father cut his grandmother out of his life.”

Ethan looked at the woman who had raised him, the woman who had taught him how to sign contracts before she taught him how to apologize.

“I’ll tell him the truth in words he can understand.”

“And what truth is that?”

“That love never needs to make a baby cry to prove ownership.”

Margaret’s face changed then. Not sorrow. Not remorse. Rage, briefly unveiled.

“She has poisoned you.”

“No,” Ethan said. “She showed me where the poison was.”

Margaret reached into her coat and removed an envelope.

“Your father wrote this before he died. You should read it before you destroy what he built.”

Ethan did not take it.

“Mail it to my lawyer.”

For the first time, Margaret looked truly alone.

Then she got back into the car.
