Chapter 12 - The Trial of Adrian Vale
Adrian’s trial began fourteen months after Lily’s birth.
Prosecutors charged him with conspiracy, wire fraud, falsification of medical records, coercion and theft from Brookline Health. The custody case and divorce were handled separately, but the hospital footage shaped the public understanding of everything.
Adrian’s defense argued that Vanessa manipulated company finances and Dr. Rourke created the false test. They portrayed Adrian as an unfaithful husband, not a criminal mastermind.
Then Nolan testified.
He described meetings in Adrian’s executive office, the control vial and the plan to reverse two digits in Lily’s sample number.
Vanessa testified next. She admitted her own crimes and produced Adrian’s handwritten merger timeline. Beside the date of Lily’s expected birth, he had written:
Test. Signature. Discharge. Announcement.
The four words removed any claim of sudden emotional shock.
Emma testified behind privacy screens that prevented cameras from showing Lily.
Adrian’s attorney asked why she accepted the forty dollars if she believed he was coercing her.
“My hands were holding a newborn,” Emma said. “He put the money into my palm. Accepting an object is not accepting the story attached to it.”
The attorney suggested she used the trust call to punish an unfaithful husband.
Emma answered that the account freezes preserved patient funds later proven to be stolen.
The entrance footage played.
Jurors watched Adrian deny Lily, refuse safe shelter and order Emma to disappear. Then they saw his SUV leave before Emma made the call.
The defense said the video was prejudicial.
The judge said conduct did not become unfair evidence merely because it was difficult to watch.
The jury convicted Adrian on every major financial and conspiracy count.
He was also found guilty of medical-record falsification and coercive conduct connected to the attempted proxy transfer.
When the verdict was read, Adrian looked at Emma for the first time in weeks.
She did not look back.
Lily was home with Margaret, the retired nurse who once worked beside Helena Brooks.
