Chapter 18 - Lily’s First Question
When Lily was six, she found an old photograph of Emma outside St. Anne’s.
The image had been printed before the footage was sealed. Emma stood in a white hospital gown holding a swaddled baby. Her face was red from crying.
Lily recognized herself.
“Why were you sad?”
Emma had prepared for the question but not for the ordinary afternoon on which it arrived.
She explained that Lily’s father made a harmful choice and left them without a safe ride. She did not describe the false test, affair or trial.
“Did he not want me?”
Emma sat beside her.
“He tried to say you were not his because he wanted something else. That was about his choices, not your worth.”
Lily considered this.
“Who came back?”
The question surprised Emma.
She showed her the next image: June approaching from the hospital, Hedy’s car arriving and Emma holding the phone.
“People came toward us.”
Lily asked whether the forty-dollar story was true. Children at school had heard fragments from parents.
Emma said yes.
“Did you keep it?”
“No. It helped other mothers get home.”
Lily seemed satisfied.
Years later, she would learn more and feel new emotions. Emma could not prevent that. She could only make truth available without forcing Lily to carry adult shame too early.
They placed the photograph back inside the archive box.
Then Lily asked for ice cream.
Emma smiled at the sudden change.

They left the box closed and went outside.
