The financial investigation uncovered more than a corrupt sale.
Vanessa had created six consulting companies that billed Brookline for merger preparation, market analysis and executive recruitment. Most performed no work. Their payments traveled through Northbridge Partners and returned to accounts controlled by Vanessa and Adrian.
Twenty-three million dollars had already moved.
A second fund paid private investigators who followed Emma during pregnancy. They recorded meetings with Hedy, photographed her entering the maternal-care foundation and copied mail from her apartment.
Adrian told the board the surveillance protected company security.
Invoices described it differently.
One report listed ways to portray Emma as emotionally unstable after birth. Another researched physicians willing to support emergency restrictions on trust authority.
The paternity fraud was not an isolated desperate act.
It was one part of a planned institutional takeover.
Federal investigators joined the case after discovering interstate transfers and falsified medical records. Vanessa’s offshore account was frozen. Nolan Rourke requested immunity and offered to cooperate.
He admitted Adrian provided the sample used to create the false result.
It came from a control vial kept in the executive medical suite.
Nolan also revealed that Adrian had prepared two versions of the plan. If Emma signed at the hospital, he would release a quiet statement about marital privacy. If she refused, Vanessa’s communications team would publish allegations of infidelity and postpartum instability.
The forty dollars outside the entrance had a purpose beyond cruelty.
Adrian wanted footage of Emma accepting money while crying. Edited without context, it could appear she had demanded payment to leave.
The hospital’s full recording prevented that manipulation.
Emma reviewed the evidence with Hedy.
She felt ashamed that Adrian had anticipated her emotions as variables in a strategy.
Hedy corrected her.
“The shame belongs to the person who studied your pain as a tool.”

The bills carried Adrian’s fingerprints, but their greater value was symbolic. They showed how little he believed safety, marriage and a newborn’s dignity were worth once those things obstructed a transaction.
