Lily’s ankle bracelet carried the number SA-0417-229.
The paternity report listed SA-0417-292.
Only two digits had been reversed.
Adrian’s attorneys called it a clerical error.
June Ellis knew better.
Maternity samples were scanned electronically at the bedside. A reversed handwritten number could occur on a note, but the printed laboratory report imported identifiers directly from the bracelet scan. Someone had created a new record manually.
The audit log identified Dr. Nolan Rourke’s credentials.
He claimed a technician borrowed his account.
That technician had been home caring for a sick child.
The independent lab completed its analysis forty-eight hours later.
Adrian was Lily’s biological father.
The probability exceeded 99.99 percent.
Emma read the result alone before allowing Hedy to release it to the court. She had known the truth, yet the official confirmation still made her knees weak. Adrian had looked at his own daughter and used a forged report to deny her existence.
The backup biobank sample matched the independent test.
Nolan’s altered sample did not contain newborn blood at all.
Police obtained warrants for the genetics laboratory, Vanessa’s home and Adrian’s office. They recovered messages discussing the number change and a draft public statement accusing Emma of an affair with an unnamed foundation employee.
The unnamed man did not exist.
Adrian planned to invent him after Emma signed the proxy transfer.
Emma chose not to release the paternity result publicly immediately. She wanted a court to seal Lily’s medical information from sensational coverage.
Reporters complained that the silence allowed rumors to continue.
Emma accepted the cost.
Her daughter’s body would not become corporate evidence for strangers to debate longer than necessary.
At the emergency board hearing, Hedy presented a redacted confirmation.
Adrian’s allies asked whether Emma had manipulated the independent test.
Hedy placed Helena’s biobank policy beside the results.
“The sample was sealed before Mr. Vale knew he needed to lie about it.”
One director lowered his eyes.
Another asked why Adrian would take such a risk.
