Chapter 03 - One Call From the Sidewalk
Emma waited until the black SUV reached the end of the block.
Then she placed the forty dollars beneath Lily’s blanket, removed her phone and called Hedy Price.
Hedy had served as counsel to the Brooks Family Trust for twenty-eight years. She was seventy, sharp-voiced and almost impossible to surprise.
When she saw Emma’s name, she answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Outside St. Anne’s with Lily.”
“Why are you outside?”
Emma looked down at the hospital bracelet still around her wrist.
“Adrian discharged us. He says a paternity test proves Lily is not his. He tried to make me sign away the proxy.”
Hedy became silent.
Then she asked the question required by the trust.
“Emma Helena Brooks, do you believe a trustee, proxy holder or executive is acting against the beneficiary’s welfare?”
“Yes.”
“Do you revoke all delegated voting and financial authority held by Adrian Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Do you request emergency protection of the child’s custodial interest?”
Emma tightened her arm around Lily.
“Yes.”
Hedy entered a code.
Within seconds, the trust’s bank accounts froze. Adrian’s proxy ended. Brookline’s transfer system placed every pending sale under legal hold. Security access attached to his executive position was suspended.
Hedy told Emma not to move.
A car and independent physician were on the way.
She also instructed Emma to photograph the paternity report, Lily’s bracelet and the money Adrian had handed her. Every humiliating detail might become evidence.
Emma began crying only after the call ended.
Not because Adrian had left.
Because Lily shifted against her chest and Emma realized how close she had come to carrying her newborn into the street with no home, transport or medical support while the hospital founded by her mother watched through glass doors.
A maternity nurse named June Ellis came outside.
She had seen the discharge order and believed it was unsafe. She offered Emma a wheelchair and told her the baby should not have been released without a final temperature check.
Hospital administrators ordered June to return inside.
She refused.
Ten minutes later, Hedy’s black sedan stopped at the curb. Two independent doctors and a family-security officer stepped out.

At the same moment, Adrian’s phone began ringing inside his SUV.
The Brookline board had just learned that the man calling himself owner no longer possessed authority to enter his own executive office.
