Chapter 08 - The Emergency Board
Brookline’s emergency board meeting lasted nine hours.
Adrian attended remotely with three attorneys. Vanessa was absent on counsel’s advice. Dr. Rourke had already been suspended.
Adrian argued that the trust revocation was invalid because Emma made the call while physically exhausted and emotionally distressed after childbirth.
Hedy presented the authentication recording.
Emma had answered every required question clearly. Her identity was verified through voice, code and biometric confirmation. An independent physician examined her minutes later and found no impairment affecting judgment.
The proxy ended legally.
Adrian then claimed his leadership created Brookline’s modern value. Revenue had doubled during his tenure. He suggested removing him would punish patients and employees for a private marital conflict.
Emma placed the merger documents on the screen.
The proposed sale closed twelve maternity clinics, eliminated rural transport programs and moved charitable land into a private real-estate fund controlled by Vanessa.
Projected profits rose because services disappeared.
“You did not double value,” Emma said. “You counted abandoned people as savings.”
Several directors who had supported Adrian began asking questions.
Why had the merger bonus been hidden?
Why did Vanessa’s consulting company receive a success fee?
Why did the genetics laboratory create a manual paternity record?
Adrian answered selectively until Hedy produced his message to Vanessa:
Once Emma signs, the child and the trust are no longer obstacles.
The board voted to terminate Adrian for cause, remove Vanessa as chief financial officer and appoint an independent investigative committee.
Emma did not assume the chief executive role.
She named an interim leader approved by employee and physician representatives. Then she proposed reducing the Brooks trust’s unilateral power, including her own.
One director asked why she would limit herself after nearly losing everything.
“Because a safeguard that depends on one good owner becomes a weapon under the next bad one.”
The motion passed.
Adrian’s screen went dark before the meeting ended.
In the black reflection, Emma saw herself holding Lily during a feeding break.
The board had spent hours discussing control.

That was the life all the documents were supposed to protect.
