The Test That Came Too Quickly

Chapter 02 - The Test That Came Too Quickly
The paternity report arrived six hours after Lily was born.
That alone should have been impossible.
Adrian entered Emma’s recovery room carrying a white envelope and wearing the expression of a man reluctantly delivering terrible news. Vanessa stood behind him, already dressed for the board dinner scheduled that evening.
The report claimed there was a zero-percent probability that Adrian was Lily’s biological father.
Emma read the page twice.
She had never been unfaithful.
Adrian knew that.
Yet he performed disbelief so convincingly that even the nurse near the window avoided Emma’s eyes.
He said the hospital ran the test because of an “inconsistency” in Lily’s blood type. He accused Emma of humiliating him, deceiving shareholders and attempting to place another man’s child into the Brooks trust.
Then he placed a separation agreement on her blanket.
It required Emma to resign from the trust board, surrender her temporary residence at the family home and transfer all emergency voting authority to him until the scandal was resolved.
Emma refused.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“If you fight, I will tell the court you are experiencing postpartum psychosis. I will ask for custody until you can prove you are safe.”
Emma looked toward the bassinet.
Lily slept beneath a white blanket, unaware that her first day of life had already become a corporate weapon.
The report contained no laboratory chain-of-custody page. The sample number did not match Lily’s ankle bracelet. The physician signature belonged to Dr. Nolan Rourke—Vanessa’s older brother and director of Brookline’s genetics laboratory.
Emma asked for an independent test.
Adrian said she had lost the right to make demands.
Two hours later, her discharge was processed earlier than planned. Her access card to the family residence had been canceled. The nurse assigned to escort her disappeared after receiving a call from administration.
Adrian led Emma through the hospital’s glass entrance as though removing an inconvenience.
Outside, he held out forty dollars.
“For a cab,” he said. “Do not come to the house.”
Vanessa watched from beside the SUV, one hand resting on the door Adrian had opened for her.
Emma accepted the money because her arms were occupied protecting Lily.
Adrian mistook that practical choice for surrender.
He did not notice Emma looking back through the hospital doors at the camera above the entrance.
Her mother had installed that camera after a patient was abandoned there fifteen years earlier.

It recorded sound.
And it stored every file outside the hospital network.
