The Woman in the Red Dress

Chapter 05 - The Woman in the Red Dress
Vanessa Rourke had spent years watching people inherit power she believed she could use better.
Her father owned a small diagnostic clinic that failed after Brookline opened a subsidized laboratory nearby. Vanessa never forgave the Brooks family for calling the expansion public service.
She joined Brookline as a financial analyst and rose quickly.
Adrian noticed her during negotiations for a hospital acquisition. She understood his frustration with Emma’s trust restrictions and shared his belief that community clinics trapped valuable property inside low-profit programs.
Their affair began as strategy.
By the time Emma became pregnant, Vanessa no longer wanted to remain invisible. Adrian promised that once the merger closed, he would divorce Emma, purchase a new estate and name Vanessa president of the private network.
The baby complicated everything.
Helena’s trust gave the child a protected voting interest. Vanessa found the old morality clause inside a draft document, not realizing it had been removed from the final trust. She believed a paternity scandal could block the transfer long enough to complete the merger.
Her brother Nolan agreed to switch the sample in exchange for ownership in the new genetics division.
The false report used blood from a discarded adult control specimen. Nolan intended to destroy the chain-of-custody log after Emma signed the separation.
She did not sign.
Now investigators were approaching.
Vanessa entered the laboratory in the same red dress she wore outside the hospital. Cameras captured her removing record boxes while Nolan deleted local files.
Adrian demanded they destroy the sealed sample list.
Nolan hesitated. Tampering with patient records was serious. Tampering with newborn records under a trust investigation could end his career and send him to prison.
Vanessa reminded him of the money already transferred to his offshore account.
The argument lasted long enough for security to arrive.
Nolan fled through a rear corridor carrying a portable drive. Vanessa attempted to leave through the main lobby as though she had attended a dinner meeting.
Hedy’s investigators stopped her at the doors.
They could not arrest her.
They did not need to.
The laboratory’s internal camera had recorded everything.
Vanessa watched herself on the security monitor, red dress bright against the white room, carrying the box she claimed never to have touched.

For the first time, she understood that Adrian had not merely abandoned Emma outside a hospital.
He had created the exact public image that would make every later denial look like another lie.
