Helena Brooks’s Last Safeguard

Chapter 04 - Helena Brooks’s Last Safeguard

Helena Brooks had trusted systems more than promises.

Twenty years earlier, a senior surgeon altered a newborn’s laboratory record to hide a medication error. The hospital settled quietly, but Helena refused to let the lesson disappear.

She created a duplicate-record policy for all maternity testing.

Every newborn blood sample received two identifiers. One traveled through the hospital laboratory. The other was sealed automatically inside an independent biobank accessible only through the maternal-care foundation and a court order.

Adrian never read that policy.

Vanessa did.

That was why the false report had been rushed before the backup sample entered routine review.

Hedy moved Emma and Lily to a private maternal center outside Brookline’s administrative control. Dr. Miriam Cole examined them. Lily was healthy, but Emma was dehydrated, anemic and medically unfit for the abrupt discharge Adrian had arranged.

June Ellis provided a written statement.

She explained that the discharge order came from the chief executive’s office rather than Emma’s attending physician. When June objected, her hospital credentials were disabled.

Hedy obtained an emergency court order preserving the backup samples.

The independent laboratory collected new swabs from Emma and Lily. Adrian refused to provide one until the court compelled him.

While they waited, Hedy showed Emma the first consequences of the authenticated call.

The merger vote had been canceled.

The company’s accounts remained open for patient care and payroll, but executive transfers were frozen. Adrian and Vanessa were suspended pending an independent investigation.

Emma expected relief.

Instead, she felt grief.

She had once believed Adrian’s ambition could help preserve her mother’s work. Helena warned her that authority should always be temporary and reviewable. Emma had called that distrustful.

Now those safeguards were the only reason one cruel afternoon had not transferred an entire hospital network.

Lily began to cry.

Emma held her and whispered the truth Adrian tried to replace with a laboratory page.

“You were wanted before anyone knew your name.”

Across the city, Adrian entered the genetics laboratory through a service door.

Vanessa and Dr. Rourke were waiting beside a stainless-steel disposal unit.

They had learned the backup sample existed.

And they had less than an hour before investigators arrived to collect the chain-of-custody records.
