Chapter 14 - The Door at the Private Terminal
The jet stopped beside the private terminal just after sunset.
The cabin door opened to cold Chicago air. Corporate security waited outside with Martin Shaw, forensic counsel, and airport police.
Victoria stood.
Ryan remained seated.
“You planned this whole performance,” he said.
Victoria looked at him.
“I discovered it fifteen minutes after boarding.”
That answer hurt him more because it was true.
Martin entered first and greeted Victoria. Forensic counsel photographed the briefcase contents before touching anything. Chloe repeated her consent to surrender the drive. Mark and Olivia were escorted separately to give statements.
Ryan finally stood.
One officer asked him to step outside for an interview regarding unauthorized medical access and attempted financial fraud.
He looked at Victoria one last time.
“What happens to me now?”
Victoria glanced at the wedding band on the table.
“That depends on facts you no longer control.”
Ryan walked down the aircraft steps without her.
Chloe followed later, no diamond on her hand.
Victoria remained inside for a moment.
