The flight attendant addressed Victoria.
“Would you like the forward cabin secured?”
“Yes. But no one is to be threatened or touched.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You are turning the crew against me.”
Victoria looked at him.
“They work for the company you tried to steal.”
The two junior executives at the rear exchanged glances. One of them, a financial analyst named Mark Ellis, slowly closed his laptop.
Victoria knew Mark had worked on valuation models for the proposed sale. She had assumed it was a routine strategic exercise.
“Mark,” she said, “did Ryan tell you the model was for a board-approved transaction?”
Mark swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Did you know the buyer was paying a success fee to a separate consulting company?”
His face changed.
“No.”
Ryan snapped, “Do not answer.”
Mark looked at Victoria.
Mark answered, “No, ma’am. The fee was excluded.”
Treasury manager Olivia Park admitted Ryan had ordered a forty-million-dollar “refundable” escrow deposit.
