Chloe helped turn the version into evidence.
Ryan softened his voice.
“Victoria, you have been under enormous pressure.”
She looked at him without blinking.
“Do not diagnose me.”
“I am trying to keep the company alive.”
“The company posted record revenue last quarter.”
“Because I handled operations while you disappeared.”
“I attended my mother’s funeral.”
Chloe looked down.
Victoria picked up her phone again.
“You used my grief to build a case against me.”
Ryan’s confidence returned in a colder form.
“You cannot stop the board vote from this aircraft.”
Victoria glanced toward the cockpit.
“No,” she said. “But the owner of the aircraft can make a call.”

She remembered every time he had volunteered to carry her medication, speak for her at dinners, or explain an absence before she had explained it herself. At the time, those gestures looked loving. Now she saw how carefully he had been creating witnesses to a weakness that did not exist.
The most frightening part was not that Ryan knew her private pain. It was that he had cataloged it, translated it into legal language, and waited for the right moment to sell it back to the board as proof she no longer deserved her own life’s work.
