The Bridge Camera

Chapter 10 - The Bridge Camera
City cameras near the river had been replaced two months after Elena’s crash.
The old footage was supposedly corrupted.
Detective Bell found a backup at a private toll contractor.
The video showed Elena’s car approaching the bridge.
A black SUV followed.
Forty seconds later, the SUV stopped.
Celeste stepped out of the passenger side.
A man drove Elena’s car toward the river while Celeste watched.
At the last moment, the driver jumped free.
The car broke through the barrier.
The man was Victor Shaw, head of Vale corporate security.
He had submitted the reports labeling Elena a stalker.
Bell obtained a warrant.
Shaw disappeared from his office minutes before police arrived.
His company vehicle was later found near the Vale Children’s Hospital—the same building scheduled for demolition.
Elena, Julian, Nora, and Bell entered the old pediatric wing with officers.
The carousel music box sat in a storage room behind broken cribs.
Its painted horses were covered in dust.
Oliver’s brass key opened the drawer.
Empty.
Elena ran her fingers inside.
The wood felt uneven.
Julian removed the drawer and found a second compartment underneath.
Inside lay a red memory card wrapped in wax paper.
Celeste had taken the visible decoy drive.
Elena had hidden the real copy deeper.
“I forgot,” she whispered.
The brain injury had erased details even while muscle memory preserved them.
The card contained foundation audits, North Lantern invoices, and a video Elena recorded the night before the crash.
On screen, she spoke directly to Julian.
“If you are seeing this, something happened before I could explain. The missing money is not missing. It is being routed through fake placements. Celeste knows. I think Evelyn chose not to know.”
Julian lowered his head.
Elena’s recorded voice continued.
“Do not let them turn Oliver into a reason to stay silent. He deserves a family, not a dynasty.”
A crash sounded in the corridor.
Victor Shaw ran toward the rear exit.
Bell chased him.
Julian followed despite Nora shouting that billionaires were not deputies.
Shaw reached the demolition stairwell, slipped on loose concrete, and nearly fell through an open shaft.
Julian caught his wrist.
For one second, the man who helped destroy Elena’s life hung above four floors of darkness.
“Let me fall,” Shaw gasped. “Then you can pretend you never became your family.”
Julian pulled him up.
“No,” he said. “You testify.”
Shaw laughed weakly.
“Celeste will kill me.”
May you like
Bell handcuffed him.
“Then start talking before she submits the paperwork.”
