Chapter 13 - The Father Who Believed Paper
The board demanded Julian resign.
Investors blamed his “domestic crisis” for the collapsing company. News programs debated whether he was emotionally fit to lead.
Three years earlier, Julian would have fought to protect the Vale name.
This time, he resigned before they could vote.
He transferred temporary voting authority to an independent ethics committee and released the foundation audit publicly.
Evelyn called it surrender.
Julian called it refusing to use the company as a shield.
The release triggered federal investigations.
Former employees came forward.
One accounting clerk remembered Celeste ordering access logs changed the night Elena’s credentials were used. A driver admitted transporting Victor Shaw from the bridge. A records manager revealed Evelyn requested that all correspondence from Elena be routed to Celeste.
Evelyn had not planned the crash.
She had protected the story afterward.
She testified to avoid obstruction charges.
At a private meeting, she attempted to apologize to Elena.
“I believed the family could not survive the scandal.”
Elena looked at her.
“The family survived. I was the person you decided was expendable.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I loved Oliver.”
“You loved your access to him.”
The distinction ended the conversation.
Julian began therapy with Oliver.
The therapist asked him to describe Elena’s disappearance without blaming Celeste.
He struggled.
Finally, he said, “Your mother was hurt. I accepted false evidence because I trusted the people who gave it to me. I should have kept asking questions.”
Oliver asked, “Why didn’t you know she was still Mommy?”
Julian answered, “A document can change legal status. It cannot change who someone is.”
Later, Oliver asked Elena whether she would marry Julian again.
They had never married.
The wedding was scheduled for the month after the crash.
Elena smiled.
“We are not skipping from attempted murder to cake tasting.”
Oliver nodded.
“What about pancakes?”
“Pancakes are legally safer.”
Julian learned to cook them.
His giraffes looked like hammers.
Elena did not mention the resemblance until Oliver did.
For one morning, laughter filled the kitchen without becoming evidence of forgiveness.
Then Bell called.
Celeste had contacted Oliver’s school counselor using a disguised number.
She told the counselor she intended to “return the child to the only mother who never left him.”
The threat was clear.
Celeste no longer wanted the trust.
