Celeste’s Final Performance

Chapter 15 - Celeste’s Final Performance
Oliver looked frightened but alert.
His eyes met Elena’s.
He blinked three times.
The lighthouse.
Elena kept her face still.
Celeste demanded the audit password and a recorded statement clearing her name. She wanted Elena to confess to the foundation theft, the crash, and the ballroom fire.
In exchange, she promised to release Oliver.
“You think people will believe a confession made with a child beside explosives?” Elena asked.
“They believed you stole eleven million dollars.”
“That story had better tailoring.”
Celeste’s smile vanished.
Julian listened from the police command vehicle. Bell ordered him to remain inside.
He left anyway.
Nora caught his sleeve.
“If you rush the building, you become a hostage with excellent hair.”
“That is my son.”
“And Elena is buying time.”
Inside, Oliver shifted his foot toward the balcony rail.
Elena recognized the movement.
When he was four, they practiced dropping toys over the couch so she could catch them. He always counted by tapping his shoe.
One.
Two.
Three.
Oliver ducked.
Elena threw herself behind a theater seat.
A flash-bang grenade came through the balcony window. Police had reached the roof.
Celeste pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
Oliver had pulled the battery cover loose while she spoke.
Aggressive cardboard had trained him to inspect objects more than adults realized.
Celeste grabbed him.
Julian appeared at the stage door.
“Let him go.”
Celeste turned the remote toward him as if it were a weapon.
“You ruined everything.”
“No,” Julian said. “I stopped letting you explain it.”
She backed toward the balcony edge.
Elena climbed the stairs slowly.
“You wanted Oliver to choose you,” she said. “But children are not proof of innocence.”
“I raised him for three years.”
“You managed him.”
“I loved him.”
“Then stop using his fear.”
For one second, Celeste looked at Oliver.
Something human crossed her face.
Then sirens sounded closer, and survival replaced it.
She shoved Oliver toward Elena and climbed onto the outer railing.
Julian reached the balcony.
Celeste slipped.
Elena caught her wrist.
Below them, the stage waited thirty feet down.
Celeste stared up.
“Why?”
“Because the truth needs you alive.”
Police pulled her over the rail and arrested her.
The explosives were real but disconnected from the remote. Celeste planned to blame Elena if they detonated during the raid.

Oliver ran to both parents.
This time, nobody asked him to choose whose arms came first.
