Not Forgiveness

Chapter 17 - Not Forgiveness

Elena moved into a small townhouse six blocks from Julian.

He offered her a mansion, an apartment, and a hotel suite.

She chose a place with a lemon tree, uneven floors, and a landlord who fixed things personally.

Oliver divided his time between both homes.

The schedule changed when he needed it.

Some nights he wanted Julian because nightmares made him afraid of losing the parent who stayed. Some nights he wanted Elena because every goodbye still felt temporary.

Neither parent treated his choice as betrayal.

Julian and Elena attended counseling.

The therapist asked whether Elena wanted reconciliation.

“I want honesty,” she said. “I do not know what shape it takes.”

Julian accepted that.

He stopped sending flowers after Elena explained that Celeste used flowers to decorate lies.

Instead, he repaired the broken back gate after asking permission.

Elena made coffee while he worked.

“You are terrible with hinges,” she said.

“I manage buildings.”

“You pay people who understand hinges.”

“That is a management skill.”

She smiled.

The old affection remained, but it no longer held authority.

Evelyn requested contact with Oliver.

Elena and Julian agreed only under supervision.

At the first visit, Evelyn brought expensive gifts.

Oliver chose a six-dollar flashlight.

“It blinks,” he explained.

Evelyn apologized to him for lying about Elena’s death.

“Were you scared?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Mom was scared too.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Why did your fear matter more?”

She had no answer.

That was more honest than another explanation.

Grace moved into the townhouse’s downstairs room after claiming retirement homes were “organized waiting.” She managed Oliver’s homework and continued treating the windowsill zucchini as a staff member.

Nora visited every Sunday with court documents and desserts she claimed were tax deductible.

The family did not heal into the shape it once had.

It became larger, stranger, and more careful.

One evening, Oliver asked Julian whether he still loved Elena.

Julian said yes.

Then Oliver asked Elena.

She looked at Julian across the kitchen.

“I love parts of who we were,” she said. “I am learning who we are now.”

Oliver accepted this more easily than adults would.

“Can we still have pancakes?”

Love was complicated.

Breakfast was not.
