Dr. Pike was alive.
He agreed to meet Evelyn at a deserted railway platform, unaware Julian and Detective Bell were listening through the burner phone.
Pike wanted money and immunity.
He claimed Celeste paid him to sign the death certificate early because Elena was supposed to die before the car reached the river. When the body did not appear, Celeste used the certificate to freeze Elena’s legal identity, block medical searches, and transfer temporary control of Oliver’s trust.
“What trust?” Julian asked after the call.
Evelyn sat in the library with both hands around untouched tea.
Julian’s late father created a trust containing twenty-two percent of Vale Hospitality. Oliver was the beneficiary. Until age eighteen, the shares were controlled jointly by Julian and Oliver’s legal mother.
After Elena was declared dead, Julian held temporary control alone.
If Julian remarried, his spouse would become co-trustee unless he amended the agreement before the wedding.
Celeste needed marriage.
“She did not love me,” Julian said.
Evelyn looked tired.
“She may have. Greed does not prevent affection. It only gives affection a price.”
Elena stood by the window.
She had once imagined Julian and Celeste together during sleepless nights. The jealousy had burned until survival left no space for it. Now the engagement felt less like betrayal than architecture.
Celeste had built herself into every empty room Elena left behind.
Pike also revealed that the missing eleven million dollars had been moved to North Lantern after Elena activated an emergency freeze.
That contradicted the official accusation.
Elena had not transferred the money out.
She had stopped it from moving.
Someone reversed the freeze using her stolen credentials.
Detective Bell reopened the fraud investigation.
He apologized to Elena privately.
“I should have noticed the accounts were authorized after your recorded time of death.”
Elena looked at him.
“You noticed. You accepted an explanation.”
Bell did not argue.
Nora petitioned the court to vacate the warrant and restore Elena’s legal status. Celeste’s attorneys fought the motion, claiming Pike was extorting the family.
The judge ordered DNA testing and temporary supervised contact between Elena and Oliver.
She also barred Celeste from Oliver.
Celeste responded by requesting a competency evaluation for Julian.
“He is emotionally compromised,” her filing said.
Julian laughed when Nora read it.
“What?”
“You finally look like a man who has discovered money cannot stop paperwork.”
“I own three hotels with entire floors devoted to paperwork.”
“And yet here you are, defeated by a PDF.”
The humor faded when Oliver entered.
He had overheard enough to understand that the engagement involved his shares.
“Did Aunt Celeste want to marry Dad because of me?”
Julian crouched.
“I think she wanted several things.”
“Did she love us?”
Julian hesitated.
Elena answered gently.
“Love that requires ownership is not safe love.”
Oliver considered this.
“Like when I love a frog but keep it in my pocket and it hates me?”
