The Lullaby Only She Knew

Chapter 05 - The Lullaby Only She Knew

Julian requested a supervised meeting between Elena and Oliver.

Elena almost refused.

Supervised made love sound dangerous.

Nora convinced her that refusing would be used against her at the custody hearing.

The meeting took place in a child therapist’s office decorated with soft chairs and toys selected by adults who believed children became calm around wooden trains.

Oliver entered holding Julian’s hand.

He released it immediately.

Then he stopped three feet from Elena.

At the ballroom he had run without thinking. Now that adults had called the moment confusion, he studied her as though afraid memory might be a trick.

Elena sat on the floor.

She did not open her arms.

“Hi, Ollie.”

Nobody had called him that since she disappeared.

His chin trembled.

“What did you sing when thunder came?”

Julian looked at him.

Elena answered.

“Little boat, little light,

Stars will keep you through the night.”

Oliver shook his head.

“That’s only half.”

She continued.

“When the water hides the shore,

Mom will find the way once more.”

He crossed the room and climbed into her lap.

Elena held him.

The therapist looked away to give them the illusion of privacy.

Julian remained near the door.

Oliver touched Elena’s left wrist, where a thin white scar curved beneath her sleeve.

“You cut it opening my rocket box.”

“You told everyone the rocket attacked me.”

“It did.”

“It was cardboard.”

“It was aggressive cardboard.”

Elena laughed into his hair.

Julian closed his eyes.

The sound returned him to Sunday mornings, spilled cereal, and a life he had allowed documents to overwrite.

Oliver asked why she did not come home.

Elena chose each word carefully.

“I tried. Some people stopped my messages. Some people told your dad things that were not true.”

“Did Dad stop looking?”

The therapist shifted.

Julian answered before Elena could.

“Yes.”

Oliver looked at him.

Julian’s voice broke slightly.

“I believed evidence that said she left us. I should have asked whether the evidence was made by people who wanted me to believe it.”

“Were you mad at her?”

“Yes.”

“Are you still?”

Julian looked at Elena.

“No.”

It was not forgiveness. It was not trust.

It was an opening.

At the end of the hour, Oliver refused to leave unless Elena promised another meeting.

She promised to appear if the court allowed it.

He hated that answer.

“Courts don’t know us.”

“No,” Elena said. “But we have to make them listen.”

He reached into his pocket and gave her a tiny brass key.

“I found it inside the music box before Aunt Celeste sent it away.”

Julian stared.

“What does it open?”

Oliver shook his head.

“Grace said Mommy would know.”

Elena recognized the key.

It belonged to the locked drawer beneath the carousel horse.

The drive was not hidden beneath the horse.

It was locked inside it.
