The Night the Ballroom Burned

Chapter 12 - The Night the Ballroom Burned

Celeste returned to the ballroom during a board meeting.

She entered through the service corridor wearing a catering uniform and carrying a badge issued in Elena’s name.

Security cameras showed her placing a metal case beneath the eastern wall.

Ten minutes later, smoke filled the building.

The board members evacuated.

Julian searched for Oliver.

The boy had come with Grace to deliver a drawing for Elena’s temporary office. During the alarm, he became separated in the corridor.

Elena heard him calling.

She ran toward the smoke.

Julian caught her arm.

“The fire department is coming.”

“My son is in there.”

“Our son.”

The word stopped both of them.

Then they ran together.

The eastern ballroom ceiling burned above the spot where Oliver had cried “Mommy.” Sprinklers turned the marble into a mirror.

They found Grace near the stage, coughing and pointing toward the old musicians’ gallery.

Oliver had climbed there to escape smoke.

A fallen beam blocked the stairs.

Julian lifted one end while Elena crawled beneath.

“Do not be heroic,” she shouted.

“I am being structurally useful.”

“That beam is on fire.”

“I have noticed.”

She reached Oliver.

He wrapped both arms around her neck.

“I blinked,” he said.

The lighthouse signal.

“I saw you.”

She carried him down while Julian held the beam.

Firefighters entered and pulled them out.

The metal case beneath the wall contained accelerant and a device built to ignite the foundation archives stored below the ballroom.

Celeste wanted the fire blamed on Elena.

The badge, uniform, and camera angle were arranged to create exactly that story.

But she made one mistake.

The gala livestream cameras had been upgraded after the public incident. An exterior feed captured Celeste entering through the loading bay.

Her face was clear.

Police located her car at the airport.

She had not boarded a flight.

Instead, she kidnapped Dr. Pike from a safe house and forced him to record a confession claiming Elena orchestrated the fraud.

Pike escaped at a gas station and called Bell.

Celeste disappeared into the network of empty Vale properties she had managed for years.

Oliver spent the night in the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Elena sat beside him.

Julian stood in the doorway, his hand bandaged from the burning beam.

Oliver looked between them.

“Can Dad stay?”

Elena moved a chair closer to the bed.

Julian sat.

No one called the arrangement reconciliation.

They watched Oliver sleep.

At dawn, he opened one eye.

“You both snore.”

May you like

“We were not sleeping,” Julian said.

“That makes it worse.”
