Chapter 09 - The Child in Chambers
The DNA test confirmed what Oliver already knew.
Elena was his biological mother.
The custody hearing should have been simple after that.
It was not.
Celeste’s attorneys argued Elena had lived under an alias, avoided law enforcement, lacked permanent housing, and exposed Oliver to public scandal.
They called it instability.
Nora called it the consequence of being hunted by people with private security.
The judge interviewed Oliver in chambers.
No parents.
No lawyers.
Only a child advocate and a court reporter.
Oliver sat in a chair too large for him.
“Do you understand why we are here?” the judge asked.
“Because adults made a mess and need a room with rules.”
The court reporter hid a smile.
“Do you remember Elena Hart?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She smelled like oranges when she read.”
The judge looked at the advocate.
Oliver continued.
“She made pancakes shaped like animals, but the giraffe looked like a hammer. She sang the lighthouse song. She had a scar on her wrist. She called me Ollie only when nobody else was listening.”
“Could someone have told you those things?”
“Grace told me some things. But Grace did not tell me how Mommy’s hand feels on my hair.”
The judge’s expression softened.
“Do you want to live with her?”
Oliver thought.
“I want everyone to stop asking like I can only keep one person.”
Outside chambers, Julian heard the answer through the advocate’s report.
It exposed the selfishness hidden inside every custody question. Adults wanted the boy to declare a winner so they could call the outcome justice.
The judge restored Elena’s parental rights temporarily and ordered a gradual reunification plan. Oliver would spend increasing time with her while continuing to live primarily with Julian until housing and safety were resolved.
Elena accepted.
She hated it, but she understood that love did not erase three years.
Celeste’s lawyers then produced a final document.
A psychiatric evaluation dated two weeks before Elena’s crash diagnosed her with delusional paranoia and maternal fixation.
Dr. Pike had signed it.
The report recommended involuntary treatment.
Elena read the symptoms.
She had never undergone the evaluation.
But the hospital had a video.
In the recording, a woman with Elena’s hair sat with her back to the camera.
Her voice said she believed Celeste wanted to steal Oliver.
Julian watched closely.
“Elena writes with her left hand.”
The woman in the video signed a form with her right.
Nora enlarged one frame.
The patient wore Celeste’s diamond bracelet.
