Chapter 16 - The Woman Behind the Crash
Celeste’s trial lasted seven weeks.
The prosecution proved fraud, attempted murder, kidnapping, arson, identity falsification, witness intimidation, and conspiracy.
Victor Shaw testified.
Dr. Pike testified.
Evelyn testified.
The catering assistant testified that Celeste personally requested Elena for the gala because she wanted a public arrest to destroy any chance of restored custody.
The defense claimed Celeste suffered from obsessive love and pressure from the Vale family.
Elena refused to let love become the explanation.
On the witness stand, she described the crash.
The drugged water.
The headlights.
Celeste’s hand pulling the wheel.
The river closing over the windows.
“What did you think about underwater?” the prosecutor asked.
“Oliver’s red pajamas.”
The courtroom became still.
“They had tiny planets. I had promised to wash them before bedtime. I remember thinking he would believe I broke my promise.”
Celeste looked away.
Julian testified next.
The defense asked why he failed to find Elena if he loved her so deeply.
He answered without excuse.
“Because the lie fit the world I wanted to preserve. I was grieving, angry, and surrounded by people who made certainty easy. I had resources. I stopped using them.”
The admission prevented the defense from turning him into a flawless victim.
Oliver did not testify in open court. His recorded statement from chambers was played privately to the jury.
He said Celeste was kind sometimes.
He said she read stories and attended school events.
Then he said kindness did not make the locked doors disappear.
The jury convicted her on every major count.
At sentencing, Celeste asked to speak.
She looked at Elena.
“I became the mother he needed.”
Oliver, seated beside the advocate, whispered loud enough for the room to hear.
“No. You became the mother you needed people to see.”
Celeste received thirty-one years.
Victor Shaw received twelve after cooperation.
Dr. Pike lost his license and received eight.
Evelyn avoided prison but resigned from every Vale organization and paid restitution for obstruction.
The court vacated Elena’s warrant and formally declared the death certificate fraudulent.
For the first time in three years, she possessed a legal document stating she was alive.
She held it outside the courthouse.
Nora glanced at the page.
“Congratulations. Bureaucracy has discovered your pulse.”
Elena laughed.
