The Foundation’s Missing Millions

Chapter 11 - The Foundation’s Missing Millions

The eleven million dollars had never entered Elena’s account.

North Lantern divided it among fake foster agencies, luxury consulting fees, and political donations. Celeste used photographs of real children to create imaginary placements.

The cruelty was efficient.

Children already lost inside overloaded systems became names on invoices. Nobody expected them to complain about money they never knew existed.

Elena had discovered the scheme while reviewing emergency housing payments. One boy appeared in three states on the same day.

She froze the accounts.

Celeste forged her credentials, reopened them, and framed her.

Victor Shaw confirmed the plan.

He claimed Celeste promised the crash would look like Elena stole the money and fled. He did not know Elena was in the car until after he began driving toward the bridge.

“You still kept going,” Bell said.

Shaw looked at the table.

“Yes.”

He admitted drugging Elena’s water, switching cars, and paying the fisherman who found her to delay reporting the rescue. The fisherman eventually called an ambulance anyway.

Celeste had Dr. Pike declare Elena dead early so no hospital would match Jane Doe records to her name.

Every part of the plot depended on systems failing separately enough that no one saw the whole design.

The prosecutors prepared charges.

Celeste remained free because Shaw’s testimony required corroboration and her lawyers challenged the memory card’s chain of custody.

Then the foundation’s servers were attacked.

Files vanished.

Witness addresses were downloaded.

Grace’s apartment was broken into.

Nothing was taken except the photograph of Celeste beside the carousel.

Elena insisted Grace move to a secure hotel.

Julian offered one of his properties.

Grace refused.

“I will not hide in a hotel named after the family that ignored me.”

Nora found her a room above the tailor shop.

Grace complained about the plumbing and adopted the zucchini Elena had never cooked, placing it on the windowsill as “management.”

Oliver visited Elena there under supervision.

He loved the narrow stairs and the fact that the radiator banged like a ghost demanding rent.

Julian arrived with groceries.

Elena checked every bag.

He noticed but did not take offense.

Trust after trauma was not a gift. It was an inspection.

While Oliver built a cardboard lighthouse, Julian apologized.

Not for believing Celeste once.

For continuing to believe because the lie protected his life from disruption.

“I thought grief made me powerless,” he said. “But I had money, investigators, and access. I stopped because the answers I received allowed me to stop.”

Elena looked at him.

“That is not the same as causing it.”

“No.”

“It is not nothing either.”

“No.”

His refusal to ask for immediate forgiveness mattered.

Oliver held up the cardboard lighthouse.

“It needs a door.”

Julian handed him scissors.

Elena watched father and son work.

She did not imagine their old family restored.

She began imagining a new shape that told the truth.
