The Fiancée With the Perfect Story

Chapter 07 - The Fiancée With the Perfect Story
Celeste held a press conference.
She stood on the steps of the Vale Foundation headquarters in a cream suit and asked the public to respect Oliver’s emotional health.
She described Elena as a former employee facing serious financial charges.
She said Julian was vulnerable because of guilt and grief.
She said the engagement remained “a private matter.”
The ring was still on her finger.
Reporters asked whether she had filed the emergency custody order before Elena appeared at the gala.
Celeste replied that security had alerted her to a suspicious catering employee.
That was the first verifiable lie.
The catering roster had been finalized at 4:10 p.m.
The custody petition was electronically signed at 3:42.
Nora found the timestamp.
Julian found something worse.
Celeste’s office had approved Elena’s assignment.
The temporary catering agency originally sent another server. Celeste’s assistant requested Elena Brooks by name and offered double rate.
“They wanted me in that ballroom,” Elena said.
Nora paced Julian’s library.
“Question is whether they wanted you arrested quietly or exposed publicly.”
Julian looked toward the doorway where Oliver slept on a couch under Grace’s supervision.
“Why involve him?”
“Because a grieving child calling a criminal ‘Mommy’ makes the mother look manipulative.”
Elena shook her head.
“Unless he recognized me too clearly.”
Celeste had underestimated Oliver’s memory.
Julian removed the engagement ring from a safe where Celeste had returned it after he postponed the wedding. The diamond had belonged to his grandmother.
Inside the band was a new inscription:
North Lantern, 9/2.
The name of the shell company.
The date of Elena’s crash.
It looked like a private trophy.
Evelyn Vale entered without knocking.
She demanded Julian stop investigating.
“The company is already losing contracts.”
“My son lost his mother.”
“And he survived.”
Elena stood.
“Surviving is not permission.”
Evelyn looked at her with open contempt.
“You came from nothing, joined the foundation, seduced my son, and immediately began questioning accounts that existed before you.”
“I was hired to question accounts.”
“You wanted control.”
“No. I wanted receipts.”
Nora coughed to hide a laugh.
Julian asked Evelyn whether she authorized North Lantern transfers.
She said no.
Elena watched her carefully.
The denial came quickly, but not cleanly.
“You knew something,” Elena said.
Evelyn’s gaze shifted.
She admitted Celeste claimed the off-book money supported confidential relocation for abused children. Public disclosure, Celeste said, would expose protected identities.
Evelyn chose not to audit.
“Because the story made you feel noble,” Elena said.
Evelyn slapped her.
The room froze.
Julian stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Evelyn stared at her son.
“You would remove your mother for a fugitive?”
“I am removing anyone who thinks my house makes her violence private.”
Evelyn left.
On the table, her handbag remained open.
Inside was a silver burner phone.
It began to ring.
