Lucas appeared at the first hearing in a gray jail uniform while Emma attended by video.
He looked smaller than the man at the staircase.
His attorney described the push as an impulsive act during a marital argument. He emphasized that Lucas came downstairs and knelt beside Emma.

The court heard Emma ask for an ambulance.
It heard Lucas ignore her and reach for the phone.
The prosecutor displayed the trust messages and the plan to seek emergency authority if Emma became medically unavailable.
Lucas looked directly toward the screen.
“Emma, I am sorry.”
She felt the familiar pull to make his discomfort easier.
This time, she did not rescue him from the truth.
“You knew I was carrying your child,” she said.
