The Signature They Wanted

Chapter 03 - The Signature They Wanted

The document was a trust authorization, not a divorce agreement.

After Emma became pregnant, the trust added her unborn child as the next beneficiary.

That was when Victor Cole became interested.

The Reed trust could save all three men.

But only Emma could authorize a loan against it.

She refused.

Lucas became colder after that. He moved into his father’s house, emptied their joint account, and told friends Emma had become irrational during pregnancy.

Then he hid the nursery box and her original trust papers upstairs.

At the staircase, he placed the authorization on top of the box.

“Sign, and you can take everything,” he said.

Emma tore the document in half.

Victor watched from the hallway.

Caleb laughed from below.

Lucas leaned close.

“You think the baby makes you untouchable.”

Emma looked him directly in the eyes.

“No. I think being your wife made me too trusting.”

She turned toward the stairs.

Lucas called her name once.

For half a second, Emma believed he might apologize. Instead, he glanced toward Victor, who gave the smallest nod. It was not an order spoken aloud, but years of obedience passed between them.

Emma felt both of Lucas’s hands against her shoulder blades.

The force was deliberate.

That was when she understood the signature had never been the final demand. The real demand was obedience. If she could not be frightened into surrendering the trust, they would make her physically incapable of stopping them.

Then his hands struck her back.
