The Voice on the Phone

Chapter 04 - The Voice on the Phone

Michael Grant had represented Emma’s mother for eighteen years.

He was sixty, patient, and nearly impossible to frighten.

The sound of Emma falling frightened him.

Michael saw Lucas standing above her.

He saw Victor behind him.

He saw Caleb run into view.

He also heard Lucas say, “Get the phone before she sends it.”

Police and an ambulance were already being dispatched.

“Lucas, I saw everything,” Michael said.

Lucas tried to end the call.

The screen was locked under Emma’s emergency evidence setting. Closing the application required a code he did not know.

Victor shouted from upstairs.

“Turn it off!”

Michael heard that too.

Lucas pointed the phone toward the railing.

“You set this up,” he accused Emma.

She lay curled on the floor, one hand beneath her stomach.

“I asked you to call for help.”

Caleb came down two steps, then stopped.

Victor ordered him to take the phone outside.

Michael spoke again.

“Touch nothing. Emergency services are on their way.”

The men went silent.

For the first time since Emma entered the house, they understood they were no longer controlling who heard the story.
