Chapter 09 - The Hospital Room
Emma’s baby survived.
The fall caused a placental injury and early contractions, but doctors stopped the labor. Michael sat near the window.
Emma’s older sister, Rachel, held her uninjured hand.
No one mentioned Lucas until Emma asked.
“Was he arrested?”
Michael nodded.
“Aggravated assault. Additional charges may follow.”
“Victor?”
“Evidence tampering and conspiracy are being reviewed.”
“Caleb?”
“He gave a statement.”
Emma looked toward the fetal monitor.
“Did he tell the truth?”
“Most of it.”
Rachel’s face tightened.
“Most?”
Caleb admitted Lucas pushed Emma and Victor ordered them to seize the phone. But he claimed he knew nothing about the forged loan documents.
Michael did not believe him.
Neither did Emma.
Lucas called the hospital repeatedly from detention. He left messages saying he panicked, that he never meant for her to fall so far, that he loved the baby.
