The Three Stars on His Arm

Chapter 01 - The Three Stars on His Arm
Jack Rowan had been sitting on the park bench for eleven minutes when three little girls in matching rose-colored dresses stopped in front of him.
They looked almost identical.
Same pale-blonde curls.
Same blue eyes.
Same large red bows tied above their ponytails.
Jack lowered the paper cup in his hand.
The girl in the center studied his face while her sisters looked at the compass tattoo exposed beneath his rolled sleeve.
A circle surrounded the compass rose. Near its northern point were three tiny stars.
The middle girl pointed.
“You have Daddy’s picture on your arm.”
Jack forgot how to breathe.
“What did you say?”
The smallest girl stepped closer.
“Mommy keeps a photo in the blue box. Our daddy has that compass.”
Jack looked from one child to the next.
They were approximately six years old.
Six years earlier, he had awakened inside a private rehabilitation hospital with no clear memory of the helicopter crash that ended his military career. His older brother told him that Claire Bennett and the babies she carried had died while Jack was missing overseas.
Jack had seen the death certificates.
Three infant names had appeared beneath Claire’s.
Ava.
Lily.
Sophie.
The names these children now gave him.
“My name is Ava,” the middle girl said. “That’s Lily, and that’s Sophie.”
Jack’s paper cup fell onto the leaves.
A woman’s voice cut across the playground.
“Girls, get away from him!”
Claire Bennett ran toward the bench in a beige coat, terror and anger transforming the face Jack remembered from every dream he could never fully recover.
She pulled the triplets behind her.
Jack stood too quickly.
“Claire?”
Her expression changed when she saw his face.
For one second, all anger disappeared.
Then it returned harder.
“No.”
“Claire, I thought you were dead.”
“Stay away from my daughters.”
“They’re alive.”
She stared at him as though the words were an insult.
“You don’t get to disappear for six years and come back pretending you didn’t know.”
“I was told your car went into the river.”
“You sent me a video saying you wanted another life.”
“I never sent you anything.”
The girls looked between them.
Sophie tugged Claire’s coat.
“Mommy, he has the three stars.”
Jack turned his forearm upward.
He had added those stars after the ultrasound technician said Claire was carrying triplets. Beneath them, tattooed in tiny letters, were three names Jack had chosen with her.
Claire saw the lettering.
Her hand rose to her mouth.
Jack reached into his jacket and removed the message that had brought him to Willow Park.
BE AT THE EAST BENCH AT 4:15.
THE TRUTH WILL WALK TOWARD YOU.
No signature.
Claire read it without taking the paper.
Then a black SUV stopped beside the curb.
Jack recognized the vehicle.
It belonged to Northstar Rescue Technologies, the billion-dollar company he had founded with his older brother Daniel.
The rear door opened.
A man in a dark suit raised a phone toward the bench.
Jack understood.
The meeting had not only reunited him with the family he had been told was dead.
Someone was documenting whether he recognized them.
Claire moved the girls behind Jack instinctively.
The black SUV pulled away.
Jack watched the license plate disappear.
“My brother knows I found you.”
Claire looked at the three daughters Daniel had erased from every family record.
“What does your brother have to do with this?”
May you like
Jack’s hand closed around the anonymous message.
“Everything.”
