The triplets initially treated Jack like a person from a story.
They asked whether he flew helicopters every day, whether his tattoo could point north and whether he had fought villains while missing.
Jack corrected the mythology gently.
He had been injured, frightened and controlled by adults with money. He had not escaped sooner because he understood everything and waited for the perfect moment.
He survived with help.
The truth disappointed Sophie.
She wanted him to be a superhero.
Jack said, “Real rescue usually takes more than one person.”
Their relationship developed through routine.
Saturday breakfasts.
School pickup once a week.
Video calls in which Lily showed him insects and Ava refused to speak because she was angry he missed a recital he had not known existed.
Jack apologized without explaining the conspiracy each time.
The girls were allowed to experience his absence personally even though he had not chosen it.
Claire and the therapist established boundaries.
Jack did not enter their bedrooms without permission.

He did not promise never to disappear again, because accidents and life made absolute promises dishonest.
He promised to tell the truth about where he was and when he would return.
The first time all three girls called him Dad occurred by accident.

“Dad, tell Sophie she can’t put six cereal boxes in the cart.”

Ava rolled her eyes.
