The Three Tiny Stars

Chapter 19 - The Three Tiny Stars

At ten, the triplets asked to choose which tattoo star belonged to each of them.

They returned to Willow Park with washable markers.

Ava colored the upper star blue.

Lily chose green.

Sophie chose purple and added glitter Jack later struggled to remove.

Claire photographed only their hands and his forearm.

The image stayed private.

Jack told them why he created the tattoo.

He had been afraid of becoming a father to three children at once. The compass represented his promise to keep finding his way home even when frightened.

“But you got lost,” Lily said.

“Yes.”

“Was the promise wrong?”

Jack considered the question.

“A promise can be sincere and still fail. What matters is telling the truth about why and choosing what to do after.”

Sophie asked whether Uncle Daniel had loved him.

Jack believed he had, once.

Love had mixed with entitlement, envy and the belief that Jack’s life could be managed for a larger goal.

He explained without asking the girls to hate a man they barely knew.

Daniel remained responsible.

The children were not required to carry permanent anger as family loyalty.

They finished coloring the stars.

Jack’s compass did not point perfectly north.

The tattoo artist had placed it according to the angle of his arm.

It had always been symbolic, not magical.

The girls found this hilarious.
