The Man Missing From His Own Life

Chapter 02 - The Man Missing From His Own Life

Before the crash, Jack Rowan was an Army rescue pilot and an engineer.

He designed autonomous navigation systems for helicopters entering fire zones, flood regions and combat corridors where ordinary aircraft could not travel safely. Daniel Rowan handled investors, contracts and government relationships.

Together, the brothers built Northstar Rescue Technologies.

Jack created the machines.

Daniel created the company that sold them.

Their father, William Rowan, divided the controlling shares through a family trust. Jack received fifty-one percent because the patents were his. Daniel received forty-nine percent and daily executive authority while Jack remained in active service.

The trust included an unusual clause.

If Jack died while married or expecting children, his controlling interest passed to his spouse and descendants. If he disappeared without confirmed heirs, Daniel became temporary controller until Jack was legally declared dead.

Claire was seven months pregnant when Jack left for his final test mission.

The triplets had already been named.

Jack tattooed the compass with three stars because he promised the girls he would always know how to find home.

The mission tested Northstar’s newest rescue-routing system in the mountains of Eastern Europe. Jack discovered that Daniel had secretly licensed location data to a private military contractor. The software was no longer merely guiding rescue aircraft.

It was identifying people and vehicles for surveillance.

Jack threatened to report the contract.

Two days later, his helicopter crashed.

The official report blamed severe weather.

Jack remembered fire, metal and someone dragging him from the wreckage.

Then nothing for three months.

He awakened under the name John Rowe at a neurological facility in Switzerland. His speech was slow, his memory fragmented and his left hand shook whenever he tried to write.

Daniel arrived first.

He told Jack that Claire and the babies had died in a car accident after traveling to meet him.

Jack asked to see their bodies.

Daniel said the funeral had already occurred.

He produced certificates, photographs of a damaged car and a newspaper article about four fatalities.

Every document was false.

Jack believed them because grief supplied the parts memory could not.

Doctors said emotional shock worsened his condition. They discouraged him from contacting old friends and restricted news access.

For almost two years, Jack lived inside a recovery program funded by Northstar.

Daniel called it protection.

It was controlled isolation.

As Jack’s memory returned, he asked why the company no longer listed him as founder.

Daniel said public association with a cognitively impaired pilot would damage government contracts.

Jack signed documents he believed covered medical expenses.

One of them authorized Daniel to petition for legal death after five years of absence.

Jack had been missing from the world while his brother prepared to inherit it.
