Chapter 03 - What Claire Was Told
Claire received the first call six hours after Jack’s helicopter disappeared.
Daniel said the aircraft had gone down in hostile territory. Search teams found debris but no survivors.
For twelve days, Claire refused to accept it.
She remained beside the phone while carrying three babies who seemed to move whenever Jack’s name was spoken.
Then an email arrived from Jack’s private account.
Claire, I need you to let me go.
The message claimed Jack survived, chose not to return and feared becoming a disabled burden. It said the children would be better without him.
Claire knew the language did not sound like Jack.
Daniel told her trauma could change people.
A week later, she received a short video.
Jack sat in a hospital room wearing a gray shirt. His face was bruised, and his voice sounded distant.
“I don’t know Claire anymore. Tell her not to wait for me.”
The recording ended before he explained anything.
Claire watched it hundreds of times.
She did not know Jack had been heavily sedated. A physician asked him whether he recognized a photograph blurred beyond identification. When Jack said he did not know Claire, Daniel edited the response into a farewell.
Daniel then delivered a notarized paternity renunciation supposedly signed by Jack. It stated that he did not believe the unborn children were his and surrendered all family claims.
Claire threatened to challenge it.
Northstar’s attorneys warned that litigation would expose the babies to public accusations and medical records. Claire had little money, no access to Jack and three high-risk infants arriving early.
She chose survival.
The triplets were born at thirty-four weeks.
Daniel never visited.
He sent one payment for hospital expenses through a charity, then required Claire to sign a confidentiality agreement before the funds cleared.
She returned the money.
Claire raised the girls with help from her mother while working as a school counselor. She kept one photograph of Jack inside a blue box: the day he revealed the compass tattoo after their ultrasound.
The girls found it when they were five.
Claire told them their father had been brave once and had gone somewhere far away. She did not tell them he rejected them.
Anger was too heavy an inheritance for children.
