Evan spent weeks deciding whether to testify.
Prosecutors already possessed his phone recording. They could authenticate it without his cooperation, but his account would establish Vivian’s tone, movements and attempt to activate the DNR.
He feared becoming the son who sent his mother to prison.
Hannah asked a different question.
“What do you fear becoming if you do not?”
Evan did not answer immediately.
At the grand jury, he described entering the hospital room and hearing Vivian refer to the second dose. He described Thomas’s fist, the tear and the effort to reach the call button.
He also disclosed conversations before the collapse.
Vivian told him Thomas’s judgment was failing and asked whether he would support emergency leadership if necessary. Evan had agreed in principle, believing the concern medical.
His agreement helped her tell directors the family supported her plan.
Evan accepted responsibility for not verifying the claim.
Vivian’s lawyer later called his testimony revenge for a lost inheritance.
Evan released the revised trust plan voluntarily.
It showed he would receive financial security but no controlling hospital shares.
He supported it publicly.
The decision cost him access to wealth he once expected.
It also made his testimony harder to dismiss as greed.
Margaret Cole, Hannah’s mother, attended one hearing. She thanked Evan for speaking.
He said he did not deserve gratitude.
She replied, “Deserving is not the point. Useful truth is.”
Evan began volunteering anonymously with the patient review team, reading complaints that executives once summarized into numbers.
He learned how many people approached a hospital already afraid no one would believe them.
