Chapter 17 - Thomas Spoke Without the Microphone
Thomas’s recovery required two years.
The drugs left nerve damage, muscle weakness and speech fatigue. He resented every limitation.
Therapists taught him to slow down.
Evan visited without discussing business. They rebuilt their relationship through ordinary routines: chess, bad coffee and walks that became longer by a few steps each week.
At a CommonCare meeting, Thomas was invited to address employees.
He prepared a long speech.
On stage, he placed the pages aside.
“I spent years believing that because I founded hospitals, I understood them,” he said. “I understood the story I wanted told about them.”
His voice weakened.
The room waited.
No one finished the sentence for him.
Thomas continued.
“The people who told the truth were patients, nurses, families and workers our hierarchy trained us to interrupt.”
He announced the final transfer of his voting shares into the public-benefit trust.
Applause began.
Thomas raised one hand.
“Do not applaud the transfer. Audit what replaces me.”
The instruction became part of CommonCare’s charter review.
