Chapter 07 - The Doctor in the Service Elevator
Security footage showed Dr. Shaw leaving through a service elevator twenty minutes after Hannah disconnected Thomas’s IV.
He wore scrubs beneath a long coat and carried a black medication case.
The elevator camera lost power for forty seconds. When it returned, the case was gone.
Police found Shaw’s car at a private airfield.
No aircraft had departed, but one ambulance left the hospital during the same period using a temporary transfer authorization.
The patient listed on the form did not exist.
Ortiz traced the ambulance to an abandoned surgical center owned by an Apex subsidiary.
Shaw was there with the black case, a laptop and several boxes of PulseOne records. He had begun destroying paper files in a sterilization furnace.
Agents arrested him.
The medication case contained concentrated cardiac drugs matching Thomas’s blood.
Shaw requested a lawyer and blamed Vivian.
He said she forced him to treat Thomas secretly after learning he would expose the device failures. He claimed the first dose was meant only to impair judgment during the board vote.
The second dose, administered in the hospital, kept Thomas unable to communicate while Vivian activated the DNR.
Ortiz asked whether Shaw expected Thomas to die.
He answered carefully.
“I expected his underlying condition to determine the outcome.”
Thomas had no underlying condition severe enough to explain his state.
Shaw had written one into the chart.
He created a history of transient strokes by modifying old neurological notes. Physicians reading the record interpreted the collapse through a disease that existed only in copied text.
Shaw’s arrest changed the investigation.
It also created immediate danger.
He had personally controlled Thomas’s medication. No one knew what withdrawal effects might follow when the drugs stopped.
Hannah worked with an independent neurologist to reduce sedation carefully.
For forty-eight hours, Thomas’s heart rhythm fluctuated.
Evan remained nearby.
Vivian was barred from the floor.
On the third morning, Thomas opened his eyes.
The first person he saw was Hannah.
The second was his son.
He tried to speak.
