Evan once imagined inheriting Mercer Health.
He told himself he wanted the responsibility, not the money. Losing the possibility revealed how much identity he attached to it.
After the trust transfer, he chose work at a community health coalition in Ohio.
No executive title.
No family office.
His first project involved reopening a maternity transport program CommonCare had once planned to close. He spent months listening to nurses explain why previous plans failed.
Evan learned to enter rooms without announcing his surname.
Sometimes people recognized him.
Some distrusted him because of Vivian.
He accepted that trust would not transfer through his father’s reform.
It had to be built locally.
Years later, CommonCare invited him to apply for a board seat. He declined the first time. He applied during the next open cycle and was selected by community representatives, not family shares.
Thomas congratulated him.
Evan replied, “They can remove me.”
