Mercy Street Clinic stood between a laundromat and an apartment building in Queens.
The front windows were covered with construction paper. Apex planned to sell the property after the acquisition.
Hannah and Evan entered with Agent Ortiz under a federal preservation order.
Thomas’s old office was empty.
The email code opened a metal cabinet bolted beneath the basement stairs. Inside were paper incident reports, device components and a handwritten ledger.
Thomas had documented every PulseOne failure.
The ledger included patient names, medication amounts, internal alerts and the executives who authorized continued trials.
Vivian approved financial releases.
Shaw approved clinical classifications.
Chief technology officer Martin Cross deleted error logs before regulatory review.
A final envelope was addressed to Evan.
The letter began:
If you are reading this, someone tried to make my body less credible than their paperwork.
Thomas explained that the Apex sale was designed to move PulseOne liability into a shell company that could later declare bankruptcy. Mercer Health’s profitable hospitals would continue under new ownership while injured patients sued an empty corporation.
Thomas intended to cancel the sale and report the conspiracy.
He also intended to transfer controlling shares into a public-benefit trust, not because he rejected Evan, but because no child should inherit hospitals as private property.
Evan read the line twice.
Hannah watched him struggle.
He had spent years fearing his father considered him unworthy.
The truth was more challenging.
Thomas believed healthcare power should not pass automatically through blood.
The cabinet also contained a recording from the board dinner. Thomas had activated his phone after Vivian placed a glass beside him.
Shaw’s voice said, “One dose will make him confused. The second depends on whether he signs.”
Vivian answered, “He will sign before dessert.”
A chair moved.
Thomas said, “You both chose the wrong hospital.”
