Vivian wrote Thomas eighteen months after sentencing.
The letter contained no legal request.
She said prison gave her time to examine how fear of collapse became permission. She believed Mercer Health would fail without the Apex sale. She believed Thomas’s moral certainty endangered thousands of employees.
Then she wrote the sentence Thomas found hardest.
I began treating you as a problem before I decided your life was negotiable.
Thomas read the letter twice.
He did not answer immediately.
Hannah advised him not to ask whether Vivian was sincere. Sincerity could not be measured from a page. He should decide what contact, if any, protected his recovery.
Thomas eventually wrote one response.
He acknowledged receiving the letter. He stated that future communication must contain no requests involving the company, Evan, legal appeals or public reputation.
Vivian agreed.
They exchanged several letters over the following years.
Thomas did not call it forgiveness.
He did not erase her personhood either.
Boundaries allowed compassion without surrendering consequence.
Evan chose no contact.
