Chapter 03 - The Dose That Did Not Belong
Independent toxicology found three drugs in Thomas’s blood.
The first was a standard sedative.
The second was a short-acting paralytic used during surgery.
The third was a cardiac medication capable of producing severe weakness, arrhythmia and stroke-like symptoms when administered in concentrated doses.
No order in Thomas’s chart authorized the paralytic.
The cardiac medication appeared under a discontinued emergency order signed with Dr. Shaw’s credentials.
Shaw claimed his account had been compromised.
He also claimed Hannah contaminated the IV line when she disconnected it.
Evan refused to let the original tubing leave the room until federal investigators arrived. He sealed it inside a specimen bag while Hannah recorded the process.
Vivian accused him of turning grief into theater.
“You heard one private sentence and decided your mother tried to kill your father.”
“I heard you say the second dose would look like a stroke.”
“You arrived in the middle of a conversation.”
“The middle was enough.”
Hospital security attempted to escort Hannah from the floor for violating protocol. Evan used his temporary family authority to block the removal.
Then the hospital attorney informed him Vivian held Thomas’s medical proxy.
The proxy allowed her to control access, treatment decisions and disclosure.
Hannah asked to see the original.
The document was dated two days before Thomas collapsed.
His signature looked authentic.
The witness signature belonged to Dr. Shaw.
Thomas could not yet open his eyes, but his hand remained responsive. Hannah established a code.
One squeeze meant yes.
Two meant no.
She asked whether he had signed the proxy.
Two squeezes.
Whether Vivian had shown him something different.
One squeeze.
Whether he knew he had been poisoned.
One.
Evan filmed only Thomas’s hand and the questions, avoiding his father’s face.
Vivian demanded the recording be deleted.
A federal medical-crimes investigator named Lena Ortiz entered before anyone complied.
She had already received the audio from Evan’s phone and Hannah’s report. The hospital room became a protected scene.
Ortiz reviewed the proxy.
The page carrying Thomas’s signature was genuine paper from his office. The language above it had been printed later with different toner.
Someone had taken a signed page from another document and rebuilt it into a medical order.
