Chapter 16 - Hannah Left the Bedside
Hannah feared leaving intensive care.
The bedside was where she recognized Thomas’s awareness, preserved Emily’s evidence and felt most useful. Moving into oversight seemed like becoming one of the administrators she distrusted.
Her mother challenged that fear.
“Then become an administrator nurses can distrust safely.”
Hannah accepted the role of director for independent clinical reporting.
Her first policy prohibited disciplinary action against staff who paused treatment over unexplained device behavior. Her second required patient advocates during incapacity decisions involving major financial interests.
Hospitals objected to cost and delay.
Hannah answered that speed had nearly killed Thomas and had already killed Emily.
She still worked one bedside shift each month.
Not to prove humility.
To remain familiar with the environment her policies affected.
On her final full-time ICU day, Thomas visited the room where he had lain trapped.
The bed belonged to another patient.
They remained in the hallway.
Thomas thanked her.
Hannah stopped him.
“You listened when you woke. That is the part you control.”
Saving him did not create a lifelong debt.

The boundary made both of them freer.
