Nathan resigned as chief executive of the Cross Group.
The board expected him to fight.
He said the foundation needed independence from the family whose name had protected corruption.
He transferred Cross Haven assets into a public-benefit trust governed by residents, nurses, housing advocates, and employees.
Ruth approved.
“You finally learned that helping people is not the same as owning the help.”
Nathan smiled.
“I had a difficult teacher.”
“You had a slow student.”
