Nathan presented the evidence to the Cross Haven board.
Several directors wanted to handle it privately.
Arresting Victor would damage donor confidence. Exposing Bianca would collapse the campaign. Public scandal might close legitimate centers.
Ruth listened.
Then she asked one question.
“How many women must remain homeless so this institution can continue looking respectable?”
Nobody answered.
Nathan called for a vote to release all financial records and cooperate with federal investigators.
The measure failed by one vote.
Victor smiled.
He controlled enough board members to protect himself.
Ruth reached into her bag and placed the original foundation charter on the table.
Daniel Cross had included an emergency clause.
If the board concealed harm to residents, the founder could dissolve it.
