A city museum asked to display Evelyn’s coat in an exhibition about the scandal.

Ruth refused.

“It is not a costume from a moral lesson.”

Instead, she donated it to the first completed Cross Haven residence, where it hung inside the common room beside a note:

WARMTH SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON WHETHER SOMEONE IMPORTANT RECOGNIZES YOU.

The display became a record of lives that had existed before institutions noticed them.
