There was no red carpet.
No paid ambassador.
Residents sat at the main tables. Servers were introduced by name. Financial records were displayed publicly in plain language.
Ruth arrived wearing a blue dress and using the same wheelchair.
Lena greeted her at the door.
Nathan stood onstage but gave no speech.
Instead, Helen Marsh’s daughter spoke about the mother who died waiting for a room.
The evening raised less money than the previous gala.
