After the guests left, Ruth sat beneath the quiet chandelier.
Nathan brought her coat.
She placed it over her knees.
“Do you regret coming that night?” he asked.
“No.”
“She humiliated you.”
“She revealed herself.”
Nathan looked toward Lena, who was helping staff stack chairs instead of posing for photographs.
“What would have happened if Lena stayed silent?”
Ruth considered.
“Bianca might still have fallen. Fraud usually does. But more women would have fallen first.”
The lesson was not that Ruth mattered because Nathan was her son.
The lesson was that she mattered before he entered the room.
A person’s dignity did not increase when powerful relatives arrived.
Only the consequences did.
Outside, a new resident waited near the entrance with one suitcase and a paper bag. She looked uncertain whether she belonged in such a beautiful building.
Lena walked to her.
“Welcome,” she said. “We saved you a seat.”
Ruth watched the woman enter.
