The Grandparents and the Child

Chapter 09 - The Grandparents and the Child
Victor and Eleanor requested a private meeting with Lily.
Claire allowed it only with a therapist present.
Victor apologized for the ballroom.
“I should have believed your father sooner.”
Lily asked whether that would have kept him alive.
Victor answered honestly.
“I do not know. It might have helped.”
Eleanor gave Lily no jewelry, scholarship or symbolic family title. Claire had refused any gift that could turn gratitude into ownership.
Instead, they brought Daniel’s old security badge.
Lily touched the scratched photograph.
“Daddy looked serious.”
“He usually was when he was protecting someone,” Victor said.
Lily replied, “He smiled at home.”
The grandparents realized how little of Daniel they had known outside the role he served for them.
